Prenatal and Postnatal Care Q&A

Do I need prenatal care?

Prenatal care is designed to give you the education and support you need to have peace of mind during your pregnancy. Comprehensive care makes sure both you and your baby are healthy.

What should I expect from a prenatal appointment?

Dr. Andrea Olanescu designs your early prenatal appointments to get to know you, so she can best support your healthiest, most balanced pregnancy. During your first prenatal appointment, Dr. Olanescu will:

  • Ask about your personal health history
  • Ask about your family medical history
  • Perform a physical exam, usually including a pelvic exam, a Pap smear, and blood work
  • Answer any questions you may have
  • Calculate your due date

Once she has a better understanding of your health and the health of your baby, Dr. Olanescu works with you to help you have the easiest, healthiest pregnancy possible.

Follow-up prenatal appointments will likely be shorter, but Dr. Olanescu and her staff  will still be available to answer any of your questions. They will measure your weight gain and your abdomen growth and check the baby’s heart rate to make sure he or she is growing healthily.

In short, your prenatal appointments are an opportunity to get all of your questions answered and to ensure that everything is on track with your pregnancy.

What is postnatal care? Do I need it?

Most women expect to visit the doctor frequently during pregnancy. But that support doesn’t have to vanish once you have your baby. Also known as postpartum care, Dr. Olanescu provides postnatal care to offer you additional support during your first few months with your new baby.

Dr. Olanescu and her staff offer breastfeeding support, check that you’re getting enough rest, and talk through the changes your body experiences post-pregnancy. The postnatal care at Medical Care for Women is there to help you rest easy after your baby is born, knowing he or she is healthy and helping you understand all of the adjustments your body is making.
